Hackathons
Rio Tinto’s Internal Hackathon brings staff together to design innovative solutions that improve internal processes and workplace culture. Upbeat Digital contributed UX design and agile delivery expertise during hackathons held in Brisbane (2022) and Perth (2023).
UX/UI Role and Scrum
UX design – developed user flows, wireframes, and prototypes to bring concepts to life quickly
Intranet redesign – improved layouts and user experience for Rio Tinto’s internal platforms
Inclusive design – applied accessibility and human-centred design principles, especially in neurodivergent recruitment and onboarding
Scrum management – facilitated sprints and helped teams refine and pitch their ideas effectively
Projects
2022 – One Welcome (Brisbane)
Streamlined the onboarding process for new staff, with a redesigned intranet that made orientation more intuitive and engaging.2023 – Mind Shift (Perth)
Created a website to support inclusive onboarding and recruitment, with a specific focus on neurodivergent employees.2023 – Grow and Pivot (Perth)
Enhanced the existing staff intranet, fixing issues and redesigning layouts to improve efficiency and usability.
Outcomes
Both the Mind Shift and Grow and Pivot teams placed in the top three positions in the 2023 hackathon, securing funding to further develop and test their ideas. The success of these projects highlighted how combining UX design with agile delivery methods can generate practical, impactful innovations for workplace culture and systems.
