Strong Skin App Project
The Strong Skin App, developed by Kids Research Australia, is part of the larger STOP Trial (See, Treat, Prevent skin infections), which identified that a digital tool could help Aboriginal families better manage eczema and skin health. The trial showed the importance of accessible, culturally safe resources — leading to the development of Strong Skin as a practical, everyday solution.
The app has been co-designed with Aboriginal families to support children and carers in building knowledge, managing treatments, and creating healthy routines.
UX/UI Role
User interviews – conducted with Aboriginal families to understand lived experiences of eczema, treatment barriers, and community priorities
Workshops – facilitated co-design sessions with families, carers, and health workers to shape the features and ensure cultural relevance
Feature prioritisation – guided participants in selecting the most valuable and practical functions to support daily skin management
Prototyping – developed early UX flows and mock-ups in Figma/Canva to visualise the app in ways that reflect cultural strengths and preferences
User testing – refined the app through feedback from families and health workers, ensuring usability and cultural safety
Next Steps
The Strong Skin App is preparing to launch, with community partners and health services ready to support its rollout. Dissemination will focus on training, awareness, and ensuring families can access and benefit from the tool.
Outcomes
By embedding insights from the STOP Trial and co-designing with Aboriginal families, the Strong Skin App is both evidence-based and community-led. It is clinically informed, culturally safe, and designed to be practical and trusted, ready to make a meaningful impact in communities.
