Nature Play WA
Talk N Walk App Project
The Talk N Walk App, developed by Nature Play WA, was created to encourage young people to connect with each other and the outdoors by combining walking with meaningful conversations. The app helps reduce screen time, promote physical activity, and support wellbeing through peer connection.
Upbeat Digital joined the project after the beta version of the app had been developed, taking on responsibility for refining the UX design, validating the user experience, and leading the trial evaluation.
UX/UI Role
User testing – rolled out structured UX testing with young people to validate the beta app’s usability and engagement
Feedback synthesis – captured insights on user journeys, pain points, and motivators to improve functionality
Trial evaluation – designed and delivered the evaluation framework to assess the app’s impact during rollout
Iteration – worked with stakeholders and developers to refine features and address issues raised through testing
Next Steps
The app moved from beta into a trial phase, with user feedback directly informing improvements. Evaluation data provided a strong evidence base to support its broader rollout and sustainability.
Outcomes
The Talk N Walk App has been recognised nationally for its innovative approach to youth wellbeing and consultation:
IPAA Best Practice in Children’s Consultation Award (2022)
National Award for Innovation in Health Promotion (2023)
By embedding user validation and robust evaluation, the project ensured the app not only met its goals but also demonstrated measurable outcomes for young people.
